Red River Wildlife Ranch in Jefferson County, Oklahoma, has the beautiful Red River as its western boundary and county maintained gravel roads on the east. The land is rolling with open native pastures abutting sand hills and wooded draws descending to the river. Over 300 acres of CRP are scheduled to come out of participation in September, 2008, as well as an additional 300+ acres enrolled in the Direct and Cyclical Program. This program pays to keep ground farmable but not necessarily in production. Both of these programs enhance the wildlife habitat on the property as well as provide supplemental income for the owners. Many ranches have the right ingredients to hunt a few game animals, but Red River Wildlife Ranch has several dimensions which create incredible hunting opportunities. Numerous deer travel throughout the entire property using areas of cover in the CRP to bed. Deer can be seen moving in the early hours of the morning and late evening to surrounding green wheat fields and through the beautiful pecan bottom. Wild pigs also call this ranch home, and in late summer they can certainly be accused of feasting on the neighbor’s watermelons. This property’s location makes it an ideal place for hunting doves as they come in to roost or over a tank as they come in for a drink. Wheat farms surround the ranch, and all of the necessary elements are present to hold and attract doves during their migration. Turkeys are also present in huntable numbers with several enormous cottonwoods down on the river that make perfect roost trees. Quail are always a favorite, and this ranch has some really great fields of native grass and CRP for cover. There are numerous other animals that can be hunted here, but the river and all that it has to offer should not be overlooked. It’s quite a sight when the Sandhill Cranes roost on the sand bars by the thousands. The Red River has historically been an incredible waterfowl stop in the fall migration, and this ranch offers some great places to set up hiding spots for those fall flights. Fishing is always good on the river, and there is a place or two to get a good vantage point to bowfish for gar. A hunting cabin, which is roughly 1,000 +/- sq. ft., makes an ideal place to watch the game or hang out between outings. The incredible hunting and fishing opportunities coupled with the scenic beauty of the Red River Wildlife Ranch will make any passionate hunter excited to see what’s around the next corner.
